Jenkins defines 5 types of convergence:

  • Technological Convergence: the digitisation of all media content.

  • Economic Convergence: the horizontal integration of the entertainment industry, in particular the concept of transmedia.

  • Social or Organic Convergence: the way consumers’ of media employ multitasking strategies for navigating the new information environment, usually occurring cognitively.

  • Cultural Convergence: new forms of creativity at the intersections of various media technologies, industries and consumers. This encompasses the idea of 'prosumers' and user generated content, as well as particpatory culture.

  • Global Convergence: the cultural hybridity that results from the international circulation of media content, includes the concept of a 'global citizen'.
